Smart Door Locks are on the way, so what can they do for you?
Allows guests to open doors with their mobile phones.
Instructions can be sent automatically to the customer via E Mail and/or SMS.
Means guests dont have to visit a reception.
Does away with the old 'RFID' cards that needed to be programmed by a receptionist and sometimes wouldnt work when entered into a door lock.
(It is of course possible to 'cut' door cards direct from a connected PMS but we dont see this as a major step froward. Its often as easy to tap a few digits into a card cutting machine as it is to tap a few digit in the PMS).
Any smart door lock system will require a connection to the properties PMS. So which Door Lock suppliers does GuestDiary connect to?;

What is the future for Smart Door Locks?
At present, every door lock supplier is using a different technique, it is very possible that the technology has not yet settled on one format, but if we were buying a system for an independent guesthouse/hotel we would want;
A system that can still work with old fashioned keys (in case of emergencies)
A system that can work with a 4 digit pin number (Not high tech, but has numerous advantages including the ability to give the pin to other guests sharing the rooms who may not have a smart phone etc)
A system that does not require an app to be downloaded. (At present too many guests dont have a smart phone or dont want to download an app).
A system that sends information to the customer via E Mail AND SMS. (Simply sending an e mail is not enough as the only e mail address many hotels will have is the one supplied by the OTA and e mails may be blocked, lost or ignored).
